< << A Brief History of MCC >> >

The Churches of Christ (Kanisa ya Kristo) have had a ministry in Mbarara district since 1997, but all of the churches have been started in the rural areas until the year 2000. During that year, God called Shane and Carole Gage to begin a new ministry in Mbarara town, with the hope that someday a church would grow. The Gages began a Bible study in their home that quickly outgrew their living room. So one study became two Bible studies, and within a few months their home was filling up on both nights. While all of this was happening, the Lord called Brett and Diane Lindsey to come to Uganda and begin an urban development ministry which would include internet access, computer training, and a library.

In September 2001 five young men who had been active in the study from the start were baptized (immersed / dipped) into Christ. A month later, on October 14, 2001, Mbarara Church of Christ officially began with its first Sunday worship service. There were over 100 people in attendance on that day!

For the first nine months of MCC’s life, we met in the conference room of Hotel Classic. All of the people from that first service did not come back the following weeks and months – on some Sundays we had just twenty-five people in attendance, but a few times it reached fifty. We also changed our Bible studies to meet in that same room on Saturday nights (it was big enough for several small groups to meet at the same time). It really was an exciting time for everyone involved, and a joy to be able to see the Lord’s hand on this new work He had started!
